Hello and welcome to the first edition of Nisea, Corfu’s only Anglo-Greek glossy magazine.
Creating Nisea has been a real challenge and has involved a lot of hard work, I'd like to thank my wonderful team for all their help and support.
I have also been sincerely humbled by the faith people have shown in me. Especially from the local business community who, without ever having seen a final copy of the magazine helped to make it become a reality by financing it through their advertising contributions.
June
I’m sure you’ll enjoy this issue just as much as the last, if not more. We are very proud to have theatrical and silver screen royalty amongst our pages. The front cover probably gave you a small clue as to her identity. She is ladies and Gentlemen the totally amazing Julie Walters, and I’m not in the least bit embarrassed to admit that her extremely kind gesture of speaking to us has left me totally star struck ! What a thoroughly nice lady she is. On behalf of everyone at Nisea I’d like to wish her every success with the release of Mamma Mia, due out in July.
July
By far the nicest part of creating the magazine has been that I get to meet so many interesting people.
This month’s issue finds us having a cup of tea with Adam Hart-Davis and his partner Sue whom, very graciously gave up a couple of hours of their precious holiday time to speak to us. Intelligent, witty and with what looks like a passion for eccentric footwear to rival my own, Adam was a joy to interview. So much so that we’ve kept half of it for next month!

August
As many of you lounge around the pool with your latest “summer read” what better way to celebrate our August edition than to introduce you to a book, which the author himself describes as a “personal memoir of a long-ago adventure” in Corfu. I’m talking, of course about James Chatto’s “The Greek for Love”. Of all the books set in Corfu this one is probably the closest to my own recollection of the people and places I first visited as a child many years ago. With the end of the summer upon us the Amateur Naturalist event celebrating the life and work of Gerald and Lawrence Durrell was a fitting finale. We began our Durrell adventure in the beautiful setting of the Corcyra Beach hotel Gouvia. Watching the seaplanes begin their assent into the Ionian sky was a perfect backdrop for an interview with Lee Durrell, who not only is a lovely lady but a pilot herself! October My father is an avid fan of wildlife programmes, and as a child I spent many an evening watching botanist David Bellamy bounding around our T.V. screen explaining everything from flora to fauna. Continuing with the Durrell theme Deborah Lawrenson author of Songs of Blue and Gold, also graces our pages this month. I have to confess I’m a huge admirer of Deborah's writing style. Her latest novel is a story infused with the spirit of Lawrence Durrell, in which she vividly describes Kalami and Corfu. It’s by far the best of all contemporary “Corfu books”, if you haven’t already read it, buy it now ! September
A regular visitor to the island David was kind enough to talk to us while he was here for the Amateur Naturalist event last month. An animated and energetic speaker it was lovely to meet one of my childhood heroes.
